Deadly curve or speed bump in the road of life?
September 12th, 2007 8:50 PM

Recently, this author was faced with a real wake-up call: skin cancer!

Fortunately, the care of a loving spouse, good medical professionals, decent insurance coverage and the grace of God, allowed him to not only beat the disease, but to realize that health is our greatest wealth.

So, for those of you on the Career Path Express™, let this short note be a reminder: you're always going to hit bumps in the road, and if you're being smart about how you run your life and your career, you'll be seat-belted in and prepared for what the road brings you. Nonetheless, remember, too much sun during your youth or other "unprotected" times can lead to problems in later life, especially because Mr. Sol (the sun) is always there, always shining, and always a possible cause of something you just don't want to have to deal with.

Cover up, use sun screen regularly BEFORE you get into the sun, add layers of clothing where you might want be in the buff, add a broad-brimmed hat to shade face, neck and ears, and remember life is an adventure, but no one wants to hit a speed bump that turns into a deadly curve in the road of life.

Life Goes On: Serendipity
September 22nd, 2007 11:09 AM

In a recent posting, you've seen comments about one of the many challenges that we can face on the Career Path Expressway™. Mine came and went in a whirlwind during the past thirty days, and I'm happy to report the prognosis is great and life goes on with a new appreciation for everything we so often take for granted. It cannot be stressed enough that taking care of one's health is absolutely vital for being successful at work, at home, at play and in all activities that we choose to pursue.

Having said that, it's also one of life's finer elements to stumble upon, or run into people or places who come to us by way of serendipity. This happened recently to someone I know, who took a phone call to answer some business questions having to do with an insurance policy. Pleasant person on the line, asked the questions, got the jokes and empathized with the needs and particulars of the client.

There's nothing particularly notable about that, except that in the course of the call, the two people exchanged a bit of information that led the one to tell the other about her need and desire for a new job. In response, the listener offered to introduce her to a company that's hiring. No promises made, but because one person asked and the other responded, serendipity showed up and allowed this insurance interaction to turn into a networking opportunity. Who knows? It just might be a brand new job in a brand new industry for the seeker.

The bottom line: never, ever stop networking. Always, and I mean always, have your eyes and ears open for that special element in life called serendipity*.

Thanks for reading, and  remember: enjoy every moment on the Career Path Express™.

* Serendipity - the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for ---Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th ed.
